Mouth Blown Encalmo Seattle Art Glass "Gourd" Vase

Produced by a professional Seattle glass artist.

Piece measures 10" tall by 6.75" wide.  It weighs 9 pounds.

This gourd shaped vase was formed using encalmo technique, in which two separate forms are blown simultaneously and worked until the lip of each is the same diameter.  The two molten lips are joined, and the vessel is cut from one punty rod or blow pipe.  After subsequent reheating in the glory hole, one end of the combined vessel is opened.  This technique results in glass forms that can incorporate vastly different types of glass in a single object.

This encalmo vase joins a plungeware vessel with an auburn optically excellent base. The overall effect is highly dramatic and elegant.  Lip and base are ground and finely polished.

Plungeware pieces are subjected to the repeated process of plunging the hot glass into cold water to force the contraction and violent cracking of the outermost clear layer of glass, and returning the piece to the glory hole, resulting in a great textured surface which serves as a stunning contrast in this example to the auburn base.

This piece was produced by a professional glass artist living in the Seattle area.   Signed works by this artist are shown in Seattle area galleries and are sold for many hundreds of dollars.  He is very selective in choosing which pieces to sign.  An inconsistency in pattern, a bubble, a form that is not what he sought, imperfect color play, or any small feature of production that belies anything less than the perfection sought, and the piece goes unsigned.

Condition Report for this piece:

This brilliant encalmo gourd vase has no condition problems.  The optics of the thick, clear base are really a joy to appreciate.  The joining of two differing blown vessels at the lip (encalmo) has been executed in a technically clean and dramatic way in this example.  In the end, the shape was not exactly the gourd the artist was seeking.  See pictures.
