Mouth Blown Encalmo Art Glass Vase

Multi color base was joined to amber glass top bubble during production.

Encalmo: the joining of two separate blown vessels at the lip.  Takes teamwork!

This vase was formed using encalmo technique, in which two separate forms are blown simultaneously and worked until the lip of each is the same diameter.  The two molten lips are joined, and the vessel is cut from one punty rod or blow pipe.  After subsequent reheating in the glory hole, one end of the combined vessel is opened.  This technique results in glass forms that can incorporate vastly different types of glass in a single object.

This piece was produced by a professional glass artist living in the Seattle area.   Signed works by this artist are shown in Seattle area galleries and are sold for many hundreds of dollars.  He is very selective in choosing which pieces to sign.  An inconsistency in pattern, a bubble, a form that is not what he sought, imperfect color play, or any small feature of production that belies anything less than the perfection sought, and the piece goes unsigned.

Condition Report for this piece:

This vase has no condition problems. No chips, cracks, or scratches. I believe the reason that this one went unsigned is that the multicolored glass from the lower section of this encalmo vase began to migrate too far up the neck of the vase during shaping for this artist's taste. See pictures.
